18:37. Du Pont Motel, Petone, Wellington

Last day in NZ! Last full day, that is. We have to be up at 02:45 tomorrow morning for the shuttle to the airport... gah.

We rose early today too... 06:45 to have brekky and head off to Picton to get the ferry to Wellington. We made good time through the foggy/misty Rai Valley. It was dairy farming country - we saw lots of cows but hardly any sheep. We only made one stop all the way for photos.

Early to rise...
Morning mist in Rai Valley

At Picton we filled the car and dropped it off at the ferry terminal. Then it was on to the InterIslander ferry and away through the Marlborough Sounds to the North Island.

The ferry was pretty big - three decks for passengers, two for cars, and one with trains on it! We relaxed and Michelle had a coffee from the snack bar. We moved down to the TV lounge to veg in front of the second Test, NZ v SL in Hamilton. It was a slow, lazy crossing. It was interesting to see the two islands at once, separated by the Cook Strait. From near Wellington, we could see a long expanse of the South Island, including huge mountains with snow on.

After landing in Wellington, we grabbed a taxi to the motel. With only $12 left in NZ money and a $20 fare, we had to get the cabby to stop at a bank for a withdrawal. Now we have enough for a fush and chup dinner too!

We walked around the centre of Petone (the suburb of Wellington we are in) and notices all the combo Chinese take away/fish'n'chip shops. Into a supermarket in search of some kiwifruit chocolate - and found it was the hugest and most amazing supermarket anywhere! We got two nashi pears for only 60 cents! No chocolate though - we'll have to get it tomorrow at the airport.

For dinner tonight we've just had fush and chups! We ordered a home delivery to the motel room. Fish, chips, kumara chips, and I tried a "waffle dog" and a "curry roll". The waffle dog was like a dagwood dog with a waffly shaped batter, and the curry roll was like a spring roll-shaped curry samosa thingy. Not bad.

Soon it's time for bed in time for some sleep before the early rise... yipe.

Accommodation: Du Pont Motel, Wellington: $82.
Food and drink: $18.20.
InterIslander ferry: $60.
