The Demesnes - New GURPS Spells


Introduction

The following spells are not in GURPS Magic or Grimoire, but are available in the Demesnes campaign.

Enchantment College

Imbue Mana - Regular

This spell is used to recharge magical items which store mana. Immediately following a successful casting of Imbue Mana, the same spellcaster should cast a spell which reproduces an effect of the magical item (making both the Magical Will and spell skill rolls). The mana gathered for this second spell is then stored in the item and the spell has no other effect. If the second spell is not an appropriate spell to recharge the item, it takes effect normally (with the item as a target, if applicable) and no mana is stored.
Cost: 1 per mana point to be stored.
Prerequisite: Enchant.
Time to cast: 1 minute.

Ley Line College

The spells in the Ley Line College interact with the lines of magical power which criss-cross the earth. Many can only be cast while the caster is standing or otherwise on a ley line. Although the costs of some of these spells are high, the fact that they require a ley line to be cast means that usually ample mana will be available.

Sense Ley Line - Special

The caster can see ley lines as glowing silvery tracks on the ground. Ley lines cannot be hidden by spells such as Conceal Magic; they are far too powerful. Duration: 1 minute.
Cost: 2 to cast, 1 to maintain.
Time to cast: 3 seconds.

Seek Ley Line - Information

The caster will be aware of the direction and distance to the nearest ley line.
Cost: 1.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line.
Time to cast: 3 seconds.

Ley Shout - Special

Allows the caster to project his voice to everyone on the same ley line. Distance is no object. Anyone standing or otherwise on the ley line will hear the caster's voice. The time lag is no greater than for a normal speaking distance - the sound travels instantaneously to all points along the ley line.
Duration: 1 minute.
Cost: 2 to cast, 1 to maintain.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line.
Time to cast: 1 second.

Ley Whisper - Special

Allows the caster to speak to a specific individual standing on the same ley line. The recipient can be either a person known (or believed) to be on the line, or anyone at a specified place along the line. The recipient will not know where the voice is coming from unless he is expecting it or the caster explains. This spell does not allow the caster to hear what the recipient says - see Ley Communication for that.
Duration: 1 minute.
Cost: 3 to cast, 1 to maintain.
Prerequisite: Ley Shout (Sense Ley Line).
Time to cast: 3 seconds.

Ley Listening - Special

Allows the caster to hear sounds as if he was at another position on the same ley line he is standing on. The location must be specified, and the sound travels instantaneously to the caster.
Duration: 1 minute.
Cost: 3 to cast, 1 to maintain.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line, Keen Ears.
Time to cast: 3 seconds.

Ley Vision - Special

Allows the caster to see as if he was at another position on the same ley line he is standing on. The location must be specified, and the sound travels instantaneously to the caster.
Duration: 1 minute.
Cost: 3 to cast, 1 to maintain.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line, Keen Eyes.
Time to cast: 3 seconds.

Ley Communication - Special

Like Ley Whisper, but the caster will also hear whatever the recipient says.
Duration: 1 minute.
Cost: 4 to cast, 2 to maintain.
Prerequisite: Ley Whisper, Ley Listening (Sense Ley Line, Keen Ears).
Time to cast: 5 seconds.

Ley Running - Regular

Allows the subject to move at great speed along a ley line. The subject's Move is doubled as long as he only moves along the ley line. If he steps off the ley line the spell ends. He may switch to a different ley line at a nexus.
Duration: 5 minutes.
Cost: 4 to cast, 1 to maintain.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line, Haste.
Time to cast: 10 seconds.

Ley March - Regular

Allows the subject to march at a rate which will result in a full day's worth of travel along a ley line in one hour. The subject may stop at any point. If he steps off the ley line the spell ends.
Duration: 1 hour.
Cost: 6, cannot be maintained.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line, Quick March (Haste, Magical Aptitude).
Time to cast: 1 minute.

Ley Flight - Regular

Allows the subject to fly along a ley line at Move 12. The subject has full control of the flight but cannot climb higher than 20 feet from the ground or turn off the ley line.
Duration: 10 minutes.
Cost: 5 to cast, 2 to maintain.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line, Apportation (Magical Aptitude).
Time to cast: 5 seconds.

Ley Telekinesis (VH) - Regular, Resisted by DX

The caster can telekinetically move large objects along a ley line, floating up to 20 feet off the ground. The speed of movement is up to 20 feet per second. The subject may be an unwilling creature, who gets a DX roll to resist by moving off the ley line. If a subject can grab something anchored to the ground they can break the spell by winning a contest of ST against the caster's Mental Will.
Duration: 5 minutes.
Cost: 1 per 100 pounds to cast, same to maintain.
Prerequisite: Ley Flight (Sense Ley Line, Apportation), Magical Aptitude 2.
Time to cast: 10 seconds.

Ley Teleportation (VH) - Regular, Resisted by IQ or DX

Teleports an object to any point along the ley line it is currently on. If the subject is unwilling it gets a DX or IQ roll (whatever is better) to resist. Ley Teleportation has a skill penalty of -1 for ranges between 1 and 10 miles, -2 for 10 to 100 miles, -3 for 100 to 1000 miles, and so on.
Cost: 1 per 100 pounds to cast, plus 1 per mile or part thereof of distance teleported.
Prerequisite: Ley Telekinesis (Ley Flight, Sense Ley Line, Apportation, Magical Aptitude 2).
Time to cast: 1 second.

Ley Wall - Special

This spell forms an impenetrable wall of force along a ley line. The wall extends vertically up and down from ground level a distance equal to the length of the wall. Nothing physical or magical can pass through the wall. Light and sound will pass through it.
Duration: 10 minutes.
Cost: 1 per hex of wall length, same to maintain.
Prerequisite: Sense Ley Line, Force Dome (Apportation, Weather Dome, Magical Aptitude, 2 spells from each elemental college).
Time to cast: 10 seconds.

Ley Touch (VH) - Special

Allows the caster to cast a regular spell on a subject at any distance along a ley line with no range penalty. The spell to be "carried" along the ley line must be begun immediately Ley Touch is completed. Ley Touch has a skill penalty of -1 for ranges between 1 and 10 miles, -2 for 10 to 100 miles, -3 for 100 to 1000 miles, and so on.
Cost: 1 per mile or part thereof between caster and subject.
Prerequisite: Ley Whisper (Ley Shout, Sense Ley Line), Ley Vision (Keen Eyes), Magical Aptitude 2.
Time to cast: 10 seconds.
